Spiritual Counseling

Are you bored or unfulfilled by your practical responsibilities? Despite having a life that looks good on the surface, do you feel lost, empty, or discontent? Having accounted for your physical needs, do you long to serve a greater purpose?

Are you looking for answers in the wake of a devastating loss, act of public violence, or other trauma? Even if you weren’t personally involved, you may have been exposed to a tragic event or events indirectly via the media. If so, you may be struggling to cope with painful emotions, feeling called to help, or searching for meaning.

Are you in the midst of a spiritual transition? For instance, you may be experiencing religious doubt, rediscovering your spiritual side, or exploring the energetic elements of your existence for the first time.

Do you get overwhelmed easily, especially in crowds? Do you have a tendency to take on the emotions of others? Perhaps you’ve had premonitions, dreams, or visions. If you’ve had experiences you can’t explain, you may question their legitimacy. You might ask yourself, “Am I psychic, or crazy?” Even if you’ve accepted the reality of your experiences, you might wonder how they fit into your life.

If there is a spiritual disconnect between your true purpose and your current life situation, that incongruity can manifest in many different ways. You may feel a longing for connection or have a sense that something is missing. You could be trapped in a job you don’t love. It could be that you’re neglecting your physical health or stuck in a stagnant relationship.

Discovering Your Purpose Is Rarely Easy

If you’re like most people, you’ve spent a large part of your life believing that the best way to make yourself happy is from the outside in—that if you can somehow obtain the right possessions, find the right relationship, build the right career, etc., you will find fulfillment. Inevitably, though, the external world fails to satisfy our desire for meaning and purpose.

On the contrary, we live in a world that regularly puts us into the position of trying to make sense of the senseless. There is no hiding from the school shootings, political injustices, and other social chaos that is all around us, leaving us wondering how to process the feelings of fear, anxiety, and helplessness that result.

In our fast-paced, technology-focused world, we rarely have the opportunity to look inward. There are so many decisions to make and emails to respond to that the last thing on most people’s minds is setting aside time for self-reflection or spiritual exploration. As a result, many people encounter feelings of uncertainty, malcontent, and isolation because they are missing out on the inherent internal wisdom that is just waiting to be discovered.

Personal wellness is rooted in spiritual wellness, which can only be found within. Many people come to this realization in the wake of a sudden death, divorce, or other loss or life challenge. For others, the development of empathic or intuitive sensitivity sparks an attention shift. Every spiritual journey is unique, but most hold these questions at their core: “What is the purpose of life? What is my purpose, and how can I pursue it?”

No one can answer these questions for you; you must answer them for yourself. Fortunately, a spiritual therapist can guide you on your journey of self exploration and help you awaken the part of you that already has the answers.

What Is Spiritual Counseling?

ELLIS-Woman-Meditation-Lake-min.jpg

Spiritual counseling isn’t about adopting new beliefs or having someone tell you what to do. It’s about helping you discover what’s true for you and empowering you to live your life with greater clarity and intention.

Counseling with a spiritually-minded therapist is an opportunity to explore what’s important to you and what resonates with you energetically. As you become more conscious of what you truly want, you’ll be empowered to open up new parts of your life you hadn’t considered before—or were too afraid to pursue.

If you’re struggling to make sense of a recent loss or other life transition, I can help you sort through your thoughts and emotions. In many cases, life experiences like these can invite spiritual realization by reminding you of your true values. As a spiritual therapist, I can help you to accept that invitation.

I can also help you identify the nature and source of any recurring patterns in your life. If the residual emotional energy of past experiences is weighing you down, I can help you shift that energy, helping you live more fully in the here and now.

If you’re empathic, clairvoyant, or highly sensitive, we’ll look at your relationship with your intuitive side. Intuitive abilities can be overwhelming, but I can suggest ways to minimize the disruption so you can focus on what’s most important in your life. We can also explore the sources of your ability and the mechanisms behind it, allowing you to better understand and establish a healthier relationship with it.

When you bring your physical and spiritual life into alignment, you’ll have greater clarity, creativity, vitality, and direction. You’ll develop a stronger sense of connection with the world around you, allowing you to fully appreciate the natural world. You’ll also have greater understanding and compassion for those around you, allowing you to love more fully.

As you uncover your spiritual truths, you’ll be in a better position to identify the tribes of people you belong with. If you’re feeling called to give back to your community, your newfound understanding of your unique knowing, passions, and strengths can show you where and how to best contribute and serve. This wisdom can help you find clarity and peace and better understand your place in a chaotic world.

As you consider spiritual counseling, you may wonder. . .

How might therapy affect my life? I’m afraid of what might happen.

Fear and uncertainty are common obstacles to spiritual growth. You might wonder what effect your transformation might have on your career and relationships. On the other hand, you might fear that spiritual counseling won’t have any impact at all. While it’s difficult to let go of control, amazing things happen when you stop resisting life, start trusting in yourself, and allow the great mystery of the universe to unfold. It’s completely natural to fear the unknown, but it often hurts more to hold yourself back than it does to move forward.

What if my spiritual beliefs are different than yours? Can we still work together?

Of course! My clients come from a wide range of spiritual backgrounds. Most share a belief that there is more to life than what we can see, hear, or touch, but each person interprets, labels, and experiences that belief differently. It isn’t up to me to decide what you should believe, experience, or feel. My office is a sacred space where all experiences are valid and all beliefs respected, including any you choose not to share.

What will people think of me?

Our culture emphasizes open sharing of information, but in some cases, it makes more sense to hold certain truths close to your own heart. Our sessions are totally confidential, so attending therapy won’t have any impact on your reputation or relationships. I respect that you may not share everything with me, but my goal is to make you feel as comfortable and safe as possible. Many of my clients, once they get to know me, have been very relieved to learn that they can fearlessly tell me the things they wouldn’t dare to tell anyone else. They welcome the freedom to speak plainly about how they experience themselves and the spiritual and energetic parts of life without fear of judgement or the pain of not being believed.
